Mobile UX Design Trends 2016

During the process of creating an interactive product, you are going through a lot of phases. Such as concepting, wireframing, designing, developing and testing. The interesting part of all phases is: in every single one we need to keep the user central. In every phase decisions have to be made, where a main question arises: „what is in it for my users?“. Keep focused on giving your users the best experience you can. Here are some UX trends we need to keep in mind in 2016.

A lot of people mix up the terminology, so a brief explanation wouldn’t do any harm:

UI is the User Interface. This includes everything the user can see and touch. Buttons, menu, navigation elements, text, etc.

UX is the User Experience. The „why?“ behind all the changes you make. UX isn’t visible, it is the experience you’re giving your users. If that is through interface elements, through simplifying the way your users are accomplishing their goals, the way they are delighted by details, etc.

Mobile Design Trends & Guidelines 2015

Every once in a while we see a change in design trends. We definitely can say that the last couple of years we have been seeing more minimalistic design around us, flat design. All the big players like Apple iOS and Google Android have now lost their shadows and hard gradients. They’ve replaced it with hard elements.

We often just speak of flat design in general, but within every design trend we see a lot of design elements which we see more often than others. Besides the shadows, bevels, patterns, etc that didn’t make the end of the year we have seen more trends showing up: simpler and more minimalistic user interfaces, more sophisticated color palettes, blurred and translucent elements, better use of images, animations between screens and elements, feedback and better use of gestures. So which of these trends are we going to see more in the next year?

Gestures in Apps

Introduction

In the last years the importance of gestures has risen constantly. Although we all know gestures as a form of non-verbal communication, we also use them to interact with various devices. This post is about the evolution of gestures in the world of mobile devices.

The basic input commands for displays are touches, swipes, drags and pinches. With variations or combinations like double touching, long pressing or long press dragging a none too small repertoire is available. Besides these basic gestures, new forms of interactions evolve constantly. The focus here lies on natural behaviour and intuitive workflows.

Starting off with some basic platform specific gestures from Android and iOS I will go on to analyse some patterns throughout selected apps. Continue Reading »
